Become a Virginia Extension Master Gardener!

Join a dedicated team of more than 5,000 volunteers who work in communities throughout Virginia to promote research-based horticulture. Extension Master Gardeners (EMGs) provide vital public education related to creating and managing home landscapes, vegetable gardening, turf management, and more!

To become an Extension Master Gardener in the Northern Neck, you will receive 50 hours (minimum) of training and complete 50 hours (minimum) of volunteer service. By completing the classroom instruction, you become a Master Gardener Intern. The title of VCE Master Gardener is granted after you complete a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service conducting horticultural education projects.

To remain an active Extension Master Gardener, you must complete 20 hours of volunteer service and 8 hours of continuing education each year.

Training classes are conducted by the Northern Neck Master Gardener unit. The next training class is scheduled for February 10 thru April 9, 2026.

 

EMGs are trained volunteer educators who serve their communities by providing outreach and education related to horticulture.

Northern Neck Master Gardener (NNMG) volunteer projects include:

  • Demonstration Gardens, showcasing current practices in historic gardens, vegetable gardens, and shoreline buffers,
    • Youth Education, providing hands-on garden lessons and activities for youth in schools and community groups,
    • Horticulture Therapy, conducting horticulture-related activities in senior living facilities to enhance quality of life for residents,
    • Plant Clinics & Help Desks, giving educational information pertinent to the Northern Neck to the general public,
    • Shoreline Evaluation Program (SEP), informing landowners of science-based shoreline management practices.
